S+B James Construction recently partnered with Medford Water and students from South Medford High School’s Innovation Academy “Hex 6” program to complete a hands-on construction project for Medford Water’s new Operation Center.
Funded by Medford Water, the project involved building a custom fuel island shed to protect the facility’s fuel controls. Rather than purchasing a prefabricated structure, the project team saw an opportunity to involve local students and provide meaningful, real-world experience in the construction trades.
Under the guidance of industry professionals and Construction Technology teacher Taylor Helgeson, six students planned and fabricated the shed components in their classroom before completing the final assembly on-site. The students dedicated approximately 96 hours to classroom construction and an additional 24 hours to installation over a two-week period.
“Our new Operation Center is more than just a new facility; it’s a commitment to our community’s future,” said Brad Taylor, General Manager of Medford Water. “This partnership with S+B James Construction and local students allows us to build careers in addition to walls and foundations. By investing in these students, we are helping ensure that the future stewards of our water system have the skills needed to keep our community safe, healthy, and thriving for generations to come.”

Throughout the project, students gained experience in planning, fabrication, teamwork, jobsite safety, and on-site construction. Their work resulted in a completed structure that will serve an important operational role at Medford Water for years to come.
